EFESTO-2 Project Triumphs in First Technical Review with European Commission

We are delighted to share a significant achievement in the EFESTO-2 project's journey: the successful completion of its inaugural technical review with the European Commission. This pivotal milestone marks a noteworthy step forward in the project's two-year timeline.

The review, conducted with active involvement from the European Commission project officer and a dedicated technical expert, showcased the remarkable progress made by the consortium over the first part of the project. Presentations covered the extensive work completed to date, as well as ongoing and planned test efforts set to conclude in June 2024.
The evaluation emphasized the effectiveness of the engineering outcomes generated by the consortium, including a thorough business case analysis and the design study of a potential use-case application. These achievements are steering an exciting two-fold experimental campaign that promises a deeper exploration of design and technology aspects.
The ongoing wind-tunnel test campaign at DLR-Cologne facilities (H2K and TMK) and ground-vibration tests at CIRA premises, with support from our esteemed partners ALI-Scarl/TRLA/SRSED, are contributing significantly to aeroshape and structure characterization tasks led respectively by ONERA and CIRA.

Simultaneously, the project is entering a critical phase with the design of Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GN&C) for this specific application, led by DEIMOS. This development will soon undergo validation and verification steps through software-in-the-loop (SIL) and processor-in-the-loop (PIL) methods.

Supported by the European Union's Horizon Europe research and program under grant agreement No 1010811041, EFESTO-2 remains at the forefront of advancing inflatable heat shield technology in Europe.
