EFESTO-2 launches building on the success of EFESTO

Madrid, Spain – The EFESTO-2 Horizon Europe project officially kicked off in Tres Cantos, Madrid. The project, which is the natural follow-on of the previous project EFESTO (H2020 grant 821801), aims to increase Europe's knowledge and technology capabilities in the Inflatable Heat Shields (IHS) field.

EFESTO-2 will consolidate the use-case applicability of IHSs by conducting a thorough business case analysis, extend the investigation spectrum of the previous project, increase the confidence level and robustness of tools and models, and ensure continuity in presiding over the IHS field in Europe.

.

The use of IHSs is crucial in decelerating and protecting a space system during re-entry, making it a key factor in the success of re-entry and descent missions. The maturation of IHS technology through the EFESTO-2 project will contribute to the expansion of commercial space transportation services and the execution of design and performance studies.

By maturing relevant technologies up to TRL 5-6, the EFESTO-2 project will also support the EU Green Deal objective of reducing the environmental impact of space debris and chemical propulsion.

.

Elecnor Deimos coordinates the EFESTO team, formed by CIRA, DLR, ONERA, POLITO, and PANGAIA GRADO ZERO.

The project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation program under grant agreement No 1010811041.

.

The results of the EFESTO-2 project will be available on the project website and on the Community Research and Development Information Service (CORDIS), the European Commission's primary source of results from projects funded by the EU's framework programs for research and innovation.
